Why this site exists

A lot of Tamil is still typed in Bamini. Government offices, typing institutes, printing presses and newspaper desks in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka have years of letters, forms and layouts in it. That text shows up as jkpo; on a phone, in Gmail or in an e-Office portal, because those only understand Unicode.

The converters people were using take one paste at a time, and the ones we tried could not open a Word file. We wanted one that handles a whole document, keeps the formatting and never sees what you type.

What we promise about your text

Everything you paste, type or open here is handled by JavaScript in your own browser. Your text and Word files are never uploaded, stored or logged by us. The site keeps working for text if you switch off your internet after the page has loaded.

We use analytics to count visits and see which tools people use, and the recording tool we use is set to hide every text box. It sees that a box exists, never what is in it. The privacy policy lists every service the site uses.

How we check accuracy

The conversion table is built from the Bamini keyboard layout itself, key by key. We compared its output with other public converters, but we did not copy their code or tables.

Every change to the table has to pass an automatic test run before it goes live: every consonant with every vowel sign, the Grantha letters, ஸ்ரீ, and real words such as கொழும்பு and க்ஷேத்திரம். Each Bamini sample must convert to Unicode and back to exactly the same keys. The keyboard chart and the typing tool are built from the same table, so they cannot disagree with the converter.

If a word still comes out wrong, we want to hear about it. Send us the word, not your whole document.

How the site is paid for

The tools are free and need no sign-up. We may show a small number of ads to cover hosting. Ads are kept outside the converter and the typing area, and they never move the page while you work.
