Unicode is the standard every phone, browser and office system understands. The older fonts store Tamil letters in slots meant for English letters or symbols, which is why they turn into gibberish without the font installed.

How to tell which font you have
- Readable Tamil everywhere, including on your phone: it is Unicode. You only need to convert it if you are sending it to a Bamini layout in PageMaker or CorelDRAW.
- English letters, often with semicolons, like
ghkpdporjkpo;: it is Bamini. - Neither readable Tamil nor Bamini-style letters: it may be Vanavil or another older font, which this page does not convert yet.
In Word, select the text and change the font to Arial. Unicode stays Tamil; Bamini and the other old fonts turn into English letters or symbols.

Today: Bamini and Unicode Tamil, in both directions, for pasted text and Word files. Vanavil (Avvaiyar) is next, and it will appear here once its table passes the same tests as Bamini. Other old fonts such as TAM, TAB and Marutham are on the list after that.

How does auto-detect work?தானியங்கிக் கண்டறிதல் எப்படி வேலை செய்கிறது?
Unicode Tamil uses real Tamil letters, so it is easy to spot. Bamini text is made of English keys, so the converter looks for patterns only Bamini produces: a semicolon inside words for the pulli, vowel-sign keys before letters, and keys like [ ] ` for Grantha. It shows what it found and how sure it is.

What if detection is wrong?கண்டறிதல் தவறாக இருந்தால்?
Choose the source yourself in the "From" list above the text box: Bamini or Unicode. Short samples of one or two words are the hardest to judge, so detection gets more reliable as you paste more text. If a longer passage is still detected wrongly, send us a few words through the contact page.

Yes. Press "Convert Word file" or drop a .docx on the converter. The file is checked, the direction is set from what it contains, and only the Tamil text changes; English, tables and layout stay as they are. The file never leaves your computer.
