Where Bamini output works
Bamini is still the working font in many DTP shops, printing presses and newspaper desks in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. Old layouts, templates and whole archives are set in it.
PageMaker cannot join Unicode Tamil letters, so கொ and கை break apart on the page. Bamini avoids that because every shape sits on a single keyboard character. The same goes for older CorelDRAW versions and any Word template built around Bamini.
Text you get from ChatGPT, Google Translate, email or a website is Unicode. Convert it here before it goes into a Bamini layout.
Setting the font after you paste
- PageMaker: select the text with the Text tool, then Type › Font › Bamini.
- CorelDRAW: select the text object and choose Bamini in the font box on the property bar.
- Word: select the text and choose Bamini in the font box on the Home tab.

Why the output looks like English letters
Bamini saves each Tamil letter as the English key used to type it. So the converted text looks like keyboard characters until you apply the Bamini font:
jkpo; tzf;fk;Once the text is in Bamini it shows as Tamil again. If it still shows English letters, the Bamini font is not installed on that computer. Download the Bamini font.
Accuracy: the letters simple converters get wrong
Bamini is typed in the order the letters are written on paper, not the order they are spoken. A plain find-and-replace gets several letters wrong. This is what the converter does with each of them:

Every rule is checked by more than 350 test pairs, including real words such as கொழும்பு, க்ஷேத்திரம் and பள்ளிக்கூடம். Found a word that comes out wrong? Send it to us and we will fix the table.
Converting a whole Word file
- Press Convert Word file above the text boxes, or drag your .docx file onto the converter.
- Leave Convert all text unticked so only Tamil text changes and English stays readable.
- Press Start, then Download converted file. It is saved as
yourfile-bamini.docx. - Open it on a computer with Bamini installed. The Tamil runs are set in Bamini; bold, tables and layout are unchanged.

That is expected. Bamini stores Tamil as English keyboard characters, so the output looks like jkpo; until it is set in the Bamini font. Paste it into PageMaker, CorelDRAW or Word, select it, and choose Bamini in the font list. If Bamini is not in the list, install the font first.

Choose Bamini. In PageMaker, select the text with the Text tool and pick Bamini from Type > Font. In CorelDRAW, select the text object and pick Bamini in the font box on the property bar. The font has to be installed on every computer that opens, prints or exports the file.

Yes. Press "Convert Word file" above the boxes, or drop a .docx file onto the converter. Every run of Unicode Tamil is converted and its font switched to Bamini. English text, tables and formatting are left alone. The result downloads as yourfile-bamini.docx, ready to open on a computer that has Bamini installed.

Why do some letters come out wrong (ொ, ஸ்ரீ)?சில எழுத்துகள் (ொ, ஸ்ரீ) ஏன் தவறாகத் தெரிகின்றன?
Usually the text is not in the Bamini font yet, or a different Bamini version is installed. In Bamini, கொ is typed as three keys (nfh) and ஸ்ரீ is a single key (=), so they only look right once the font is applied. If a letter is still wrong, send us the word through the Contact page.

No. The conversion runs in your browser, in the JavaScript on this page. Your text and your Word files are never sent to our server or to anyone else. You can test it: open the page, switch off your internet connection, and paste some text. It still converts.

Is there a character limit?எழுத்து வரம்பு உள்ளதா?
No. Paste a whole document if you need to. In our tests, 50,000 characters (roughly 20 typed pages) convert in well under a second on an ordinary office laptop. A very large paste can take a moment to appear in the box, but nothing is cut off.
