What gets converted
A typical office file mixes Bamini paragraphs with English headings, a table of names and a letterhead in the header. Converting that by copy and paste loses the layout. This converter works inside the .docx instead and changes only the Tamil text.

The reverse works the same way: runs of Unicode Tamil become Bamini and their font is set to Bamini, while English stays readable.

How it decides which text is Bamini
Bamini text is made of ordinary English keys, so the converter cannot tell ghkpdp from an English word by the letters alone. It looks at the font instead. Any text whose font name contains "Bamini" is converted, including the style it inherits from, so a heading style set to Bamini is found even when the text itself has no font applied.
Some offices use a copy of the font saved under another name. If the check finds nothing, tick Convert all text. Every run is then converted, so read through any English passages in the result.

Before you convert
- Old .doc files: open in Word, then File › Save As › Word Document (.docx).
- Tracked changes: accept or reject them first. Deleted text inside tracked changes is not converted.
- Unicode → Bamini: the person who opens the result needs the Bamini font installed.

Yes. Only the letters and the font name of the Tamil text change. Bold, italics, font size, colours, tables, headers, footers, footnotes, text boxes, images and page layout are left exactly as they were. Text inside charts, SmartArt and pictures is not converted, because Word does not store it as ordinary text.

No. The file is opened and converted by JavaScript inside your browser, and the new file is created on your computer. Nothing is sent to our server. Office staff can use it for confidential letters and files: the content never leaves the machine.

The converter looks for text set in a font whose name contains "Bamini". Some older documents use a renamed copy of the font, so the check finds nothing. Tick "Convert all text" and press Start again: every run is then converted, so check that English passages in the result still read correctly.

Not directly. Open a .doc file in Word and use File › Save As › Word Document (.docx), then convert that copy. PageMaker files cannot be read in a browser. Copy the text out of PageMaker and paste it into the Bamini to Unicode converter instead.

Bamini text becomes Unicode in Latha, which every Windows computer has. If you prefer Nirmala UI, select the Tamil text in Word and choose it from the font box. For the reverse direction, Unicode Tamil is set in Bamini, so the file only looks right where Bamini is installed.

Files up to 10 MB. Text takes very little space, so a 10 MB file is usually one full of photos. If yours is larger, compress the pictures in Word (select a picture, then Picture Format › Compress Pictures) or split the document, and convert each part.
